| The dormouse has a surprising long life span. It may live up to 5 years, whereas some woodland rodents are lucky to live 5 months. The strategy of the dormouse seems to be balanced between a long life span and low reproductive rate (see Dormouse Breeding). Predation is not a very large concern for the dormouse. The dormouse forms less than one in a thousand of prey taken by owls. This is most likely to be because most owls hunt for small rodents over open grassland, whereas the dormouse spends most of it's time in the treetops. The most likely prey is the tawny owl, as this hunts mainly in woodland. Tawny owls may get the very occasional dormouse, but predation is definitely not the main threat to the dormouse. | |||||
